Hey guys!! Welcome to my mini class using the night owl.
My class is a mix between using lyrics for titles to your pages and document what they mean to you...and using page protectors to add dimension and character to your pages.
I had a video of this process...however, I can not get it to upload, so I am doing it the old fashioned way and going to do a step by step with photos.
When I was thinking about what to do a class on, the Title of the new
kit stuck with me because I am a "Night Owl" myself...and many times I
scrapbook, paint, or write late at night. I immediately thought about
music...I must have music in the wee hours. Song by song I get lost in
my creations.
I have always been a huge fan of music...not just the instrument part of it, but the actual lyrics. I am amazed at how a song can evoke emotions from the words contained within it.
We all have songs that remind of us of times in our lives...good and bad. When we hear them, we remember where we were at that point in life. Some songs just give us a good feeling.
Feeling the lyrics...
First I choose the songs I want to save lyrics from.
Next I journal what the lyrics mean to me.
Because I write down so many lyrics, I have journal that is devoted to lyrics only.
I write down the lyrics if I am listening to my iPod or if I'm in the car, I do it when I get home (when I remember). Then when I have time, I explain what why they are important to me...what they remind me of...how they've made me feel.
It's important to choose lyrics you are passionate about.
Now it's time to choose how you want to use them on your layout:
As a title for your page
For the journaling
As a prompt for your own journaling
As a theme for your page
As inspiration while you work on your page
Once you have decided how you want to use them...then you can make your page.
Here I used lyrics from my favorite song "Have you ever seen the rain?" by Creedance Clearwater Revival as inspiration for my page design and journaling.
Lyrics:
"I wanna know, have you ever seen the rain?"
Now we all use page protectors for storing our "finished" pages...but have you ever used them as PART of the page?
I began by making the background of my page by using the MODsheets from Scrapinstyletv.com. I love them because they have the greatest separate patterns so it made it easy to see how I wanted to break up my layout. I made the left side of the layout and put the page in the page protector unfinished.
Then, I sewed around the main part of my page, following the edges of the MODsheet.
I then wanted to create a little pocket to hold things so they could be seen but not taken out.
This can be done with all sorts of things:
If you were doing a beach layout...you could use sand.
If you wanted to keep dried leaves your children found outside...you could flatten them and add them.
Beads, sequins, private notes you never want anyone to read, can all be used.
All of these can be sew shut in a little pocket, never to be opened.
I chose to write down on paper some things that had brought rain to my life. Instead of a list I wanted them to have their own piece. By sealing them, it symbolized to me that they would stay there, as a reminder of what I have been through.
Lastly, I sewed an opening (again following the edges of the patterns) for my journaling. By leaving the top open, I allowed for removal of the paper if I wanted to read my thoughts later.
Now you might be wondering what to do with the other side of the page that will clearly be sewn and messy.
Well I used it to make another layout using the boxes already created for me.
Lyrics:
"Just live your life...You got no time for no hatas...Just live your life...no tellin where it might take ya...Just live your life...cause Im a paper chaser...Just livin my life!"
This time I used another MODsheet from the kit and cut the individual patterns apart to fill my boxes. Because they already are coordinated, I just had to add my journaling, photo and embellishments, and my layout was complete.
Another technique that has been around for years (although new to me), is "masking". By laying an object or lettering down and then spraying it with spray paint or glimmer mist (here I used the mist from the "Night Owl") you create a mask effect on your layout. Just spray and lift.
On the first layout, I used the butterfly from the second one as my mask.
On the second layout, I used the letters from the kit as the mask to spell LIVE for my title.
Each of these techniques are wonderful on their own...but together they make for a simple scrapbooker recipe that will add dimension and character to your pages.
I hope to see you using these soon! Can't wait to see what YOUR favorite lyrics are!
